Chapter 19 - The Hearing

Three months later, a federal courtroom replaced the engagement lawn.

George pleaded not guilty.

Patricia negotiated a cooperation agreement.

Martin admitted to selling confidential information, manipulating internal approvals, and helping conceal the duplicate liens.

Paul pleaded guilty to unlawful disclosure and obstruction-related charges.

Michael Mitchell cooperated and avoided the worst charges, though his name would carry the scandal for years.

Vanessa testified too.

She did not cry on the stand.

She described her father's pressure, her mother's instructions, and her own behavior at the party.

The prosecutor asked, "Did anyone force you to spray Margaret Carter with a garden hose?"

Vanessa looked toward me.

"No."

"Did anyone force you to threaten the waiter?"

"No."

"Why did you do it?"

She swallowed.

"Because I thought people beneath me didn't matter."

The courtroom went quiet.

That answer did more than any apology could.

Daniel sat behind me.

Carter Meridian had offered him a job after the scandal. He refused the corporate position and accepted a scholarship for hospitality management instead.

"I actually like restaurants," he told me.

Good for him.

Ethan sat beside me through every hearing.

He and Vanessa did not reconcile.

They spoke once privately with lawyers present.

Afterward he looked sad, but lighter.

"She asked me if there was any version of us left."

"What did you say?"

"That the version I loved depended on me not knowing the truth."

I squeezed his hand.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.

One asked if I had disguised myself to trap Vanessa.

I stopped.

"No," I said. "I dressed like someone she believed she could mistreat without consequence. She made the rest of the choices herself."

Then I walked away.
