Chapter 17 - The Ring on the Table

Vanessa came to collect her belongings before sunset. The enormous engagement ring still shone on her hand. Luca met her in the same dining room where I'd broken the glass. The table had been cleared, but one faint mark remained in the marble where the stem had struck.
"I loved you," Luca said.
"I know."
"You told Michael he was family. Then you tried to make him fail in front of everyone."
"Carlo said it would protect us from a bigger scandal. I thought he'd ruin you if I said no."
"You were allowed to say no to me," Luca replied. "You were allowed to tell the truth."
She placed the ring beside his water glass. "Is it over?"
"The trust is gone," he answered. "So is the engagement."
Vanessa began to cry. She apologized to Michael when he entered, but he refused a private conversation.
"I heard what you did," he said. "I don't owe you a chance to explain it away."
To my surprise she accepted that. She told Nora she would speak through her lawyer and provide the messages Carlo had sent her. It was the first useful choice I'd seen her make without turning it into a performance.
That night Carlo's consultant released a new edited clip of the party, slowing Michael's movement so he looked unsteady. A familiar voice could be heard saying, "He's drunk again."
The voice was Vanessa's. The original footage captured her saying those words before Michael reached for his glass.
Luca didn't send his security men to frighten the consultant. Nora sent the unedited source footage to the journalists who'd asked, with a careful statement correcting the timeline. Some outlets changed their stories. Others didn't.
At two in the morning Michael texted me: I WANT TO GO TO A MEETING. WILL YOU DRIVE?
I put on my coat, picked up my keys and went.

At the doorway he said, "I don't want tonight to decide tomorrow."
"Then let's go make tomorrow different," I answered.
