Chapter 18 - The Doors That Stayed Open

Unpaid vendors began calling Harbor Steps. Dr. Shah refused to promise money the foundation had not recovered.
Michael called the residents waiting to move in. He didn't hide behind a public statement. Dani answered first.
"Tell me the date is real," she said.
"The six completed apartments are real," Michael replied. "The other six weren't built. We're working on a safe opening for the ones we can inspect and fund. I won't give you a date until the permits are confirmed."
There was silence, then Dani said, "Thank you for not making me pack twice."
Luca testified to the external reviewers about the payment he'd authorized and the old contracts he'd ignored. He accepted temporary restrictions on his role in foundation finances while the review continued. Carlo and Pike were removed from payment approvals, and the board referred the suspected fraud to investigators.
When a reporter asked if treatment embarrassed him, Michael said, "No. I work at recovery every day. I'm ashamed that someone tried to turn it into a weapon."
Across the room, Dr. Shah nodded. Sophie looked ready to cry.
Outside, Nora told me the police had closed the theft complaint against me without charges. Their review of the staff-access records had found no reason to treat the earring in my locker as evidence I'd stolen it.
"That doesn't undo the accusation," I said.
"No. But it's in writing, and you can keep a copy."
I walked away from the cameras with the letter folded in my pocket. Dad was waiting by his old blue car.
"You could go back to working in that house," he said.
"I know."
"Do you want to?"
May you like
I looked at the Harbor Steps banner hanging above the sidewalk. "I want to help somewhere the doors stay open for people who need them."
He smiled. "Then ask what jobs they've got."
