Chapter 1 - THE GLASS

"Drink it."
Ava's fingers locked around the arms of her wheelchair so hard her knuckles turned white.
Margaret Hale held the glass of orange juice against her mouth and smiled like a woman posing for a family photograph. Only her eyes gave her away. They were flat, cold, impatient.
"I said no."
The smile vanished.
"You don't have a choice anymore."
Margaret caught Ava by the chin and forced her face upward. The bruise along Ava's cheek still ached from the night before, when Margaret had claimed Ava "lost her balance" during a transfer. Ava knew better. Lena knew better too.
Across the office, Lena stood frozen beside the desk, staring at a stack of documents.
"Mrs. Hale," Lena whispered, "those aren't medical forms."
Margaret didn't look at her. "Leave."
Lena grabbed the top page. "This is a power of attorney. And this—" She flipped another sheet. "This transfers Ava's accounts into the Hale Family Protection Trust. She didn't sign any of this."
Ava's voice shook. "I told you I would never sign."
Margaret leaned close enough that Ava could smell her perfume.
"You won't remember refusing."
Lena moved fast. "Stop!"
She caught Margaret's wrist before the glass reached Ava's lips.
For half a second, no one moved.
Then Margaret slapped Lena across the face.
The blow sent Lena sideways into Ava's wheelchair. The damaged right wheel folded at an angle. The chair tipped. Ava hit the hardwood floor with a cry that ripped through the room.
Files flew from the desk. A brown medicine bottle rolled underneath it, struck a brass leg, and cracked open.
White tablets scattered through a strip of afternoon sunlight.
Lena dropped to her knees beside Ava. "Don't move. I'm here."
Margaret stared down at them, breathing hard.
Ava reached for Lena's sleeve.
"Please," she whispered. "Don't hurt her."
The double doors slammed open.
Ethan Hale stood in the doorway.
His black briefcase slipped from his hand.
His eyes moved from the overturned wheelchair to the pills, then to the unsigned papers, then to Lena's swelling cheek, and finally to his wife on the floor.
"Mom?"
Margaret went pale.
For the first time, Ava saw fear on her face.
Ethan stepped forward.
Then he noticed the label on the broken medicine bottle.
May you like
It had Ava's name on it—but the prescribing doctor's name belonged to a man who had been dead for eighteen months.
