Chapter 3 - THE HOURS AVA LOST

The doctor explained that the drug could cause drowsiness, confusion, slowed reactions, and memory gaps. In the wrong dose, it could become dangerous.

Ava heard only one sentence repeating in her head: not a one-time dose.

Ethan stood at the foot of the bed, gripping the rail.

"How long?"

"We can't determine that from one blood sample," the doctor said. "But this pattern suggests repeated exposure."

Ava closed her eyes.

Every vitamin, smoothie, and "helpful" reminder from Margaret suddenly looked different.

Lena was the first to speak.

"There's something else."

She pulled out her phone.

Margaret had forbidden staff from carrying phones in the private wing of the house. Lena had obeyed until six weeks earlier, when she saw Margaret crush something into Ava's tea.

"I started recording when I could," she said.

The first video showed Margaret standing at the kitchen counter with her back to the camera. She opened an unmarked pill organizer, ground a tablet with the base of a spoon, and stirred the powder into orange juice.

Ethan sat down hard.

The second video was worse.

Ava appeared in her wheelchair near the breakfast table, visibly groggy.

"I don't want to sign anything," video-Ava said.

Margaret replied, "Then we'll try again tomorrow when you're less dramatic."

The third clip showed a notary arriving at the house.

Ava wasn't in the room.

Margaret was.

So was a man Ethan recognized immediately.

"That's Victor Lane," he said. "My mother's estate attorney."

Lena nodded. "He came four times."

Ethan scrolled through the files with shaking hands.

Then he found a video Lena hadn't mentioned.

The date on it was eight months earlier.

Margaret and Victor stood beside the fireplace.

Victor's voice was low but clear.

"The guardianship petition won't work unless we establish a documented pattern of cognitive decline."

Margaret answered, "Then we establish one."

Ethan stopped breathing.

Ava looked at him.

He pressed play again.

At the very end of the recording, Victor asked one more question.

"And what if she starts remembering what happened the night of the crash?"

Margaret turned toward the hidden camera.

May you like

"She won't."
