Chapter 17 - THE HOUSE OF EVIDENCE

Police were already on the way when Ethan saw the live feed.

"Why would she go back?"

Lena knew.

"The study."

Margaret's study still contained years of paper records waiting for forensic collection. Investigators had copied the most obvious files but had not finished cataloging everything.

On camera, Margaret moved toward the office corridor.

Then she stopped.

She looked directly into the lens.

For a second, it felt as if she were staring at Ava through the screen.

Margaret raised the gas can.

The feed went black.

Officers reached the estate seven minutes later.

Smoke was already pushing from a side window.

Firefighters contained the blaze before it reached the main staircase, but Margaret had poured fuel across the study carpet and set fire to two filing cabinets.

She disappeared through a garden door before police entered.

At dawn, Ruiz called with unexpected news.

The fire had damaged the study—but also revealed something.

Behind one scorched bookcase, firefighters found a steel wall safe.

Margaret had never listed it on insurance documents.

Inside were original foundation ledgers, Charles Hale's private notes, and a sealed envelope addressed to Ethan.

The envelope was dated three days before Charles died.

Ethan opened it with Ava beside him.

Son,

If you are reading this, something has gone wrong. I discovered that your mother has been moving foundation funds through companies controlled by people close to her. I confronted her. She denied everything. Yesterday I found evidence someone tampered with my car. I am going to the police tomorrow.

Ethan stopped.

His hands shook so badly Ava took the letter and continued.

I pray I am being paranoid. But if I am not, do not let love make you blind to evidence.

The final sentence broke him.

Ava held him while he cried.

Charles had tried to warn him twelve years too early.

Then Ruiz called again.

A traffic camera had found Margaret's vehicle.

She was heading toward the hospital.
