Chapter 5 - The VideoNoah did not have the video with him.

His mother had hidden it.
He knew only where she told him to look.
A locker at Union Street Community Center.
Alexander wanted to send security.
Noah refused.
“She said I had to go myself.”
“You’re ten.”
“I know.”
“You walked into a ballroom alone.”
“I know.”
“That was dangerous.”
Noah shrugged.
“So is sleeping near the bus station.”
Alexander went still.
Lily looked at her father.
“Dad.”
He understood the accusation in one word.
Noah was not performing poverty.
He was living it.
After Maya died, he had spent months moving between an overwhelmed aunt, temporary shelters, and friends of his mother.
No stable home.
No money.
Still carrying her notebook.
Alexander’s throat tightened.
“Where is your aunt?”
“Working nights.”
“Does she know you’re here?”
Noah looked away.
That meant no.
Rachel arranged for Noah’s aunt, Teresa, to meet them at the community center.
She arrived furious and terrified.
Then she saw Alexander Cole and became more terrified.
Noah apologized.
Teresa hugged him so hard he disappeared inside her coat.
The locker key was taped beneath the notebook’s back cover.
Inside the locker:
A pair of old sneakers.
Maya’s nursing pin.
Three flash drives.
And a sealed envelope.
FOR MR. COLE IF I CAN’T GIVE THIS TO HIM MYSELF.
Alexander’s hands shook opening it.
Maya’s letter was direct.
Mr. Cole,
I believe Lily’s chart does not match what I personally observed. I also believe Dr. Mercer is delaying active rehabilitation because her case is attached to a privately funded research protocol that rewards long-term enrollment.
Alexander read the sentence twice.
Research protocol?
Rachel looked up sharply.
Noah handed her the first flash drive.
The video lasted forty-eight seconds.
Hospital rehab room.
Lily, thinner and frightened.
Maya’s voice off camera.
“Can you push through your right foot?”
Seven-year-old Lily pushed.
Her hip lifted.
Then, with a walker and two adults supporting her, she stood.
Three seconds.
Four.
Five.
Young Lily started crying.
“I’m doing it.”
Maya laughed.
“Yes, sweetheart.”
Then Mercer entered the frame.
The video shook.
His voice came through clearly.
“Why is she standing?”
Maya answered:
“Because she can.”
Mercer stepped toward the camera.
“Turn that off.”
The video ended.
No one spoke.
Then Rachel opened the second flash drive.
May you like
It contained billing records.
Alexander’s family foundation had paid Mercer’s research program $1.8 million over eighteen months.
