Chapter 9 - The First StepThree months passed.

Lily’s progress was slow enough to be real.
At first, she stood only with two therapists.
Then with one.
Then with braces and parallel bars.
Her left leg remained weaker.
Some days her nerves burned.
Some days fear stopped her before weakness did.
Noah visited after school whenever Teresa could bring him.
He never told Lily she was failing.
He told her one thing:
“Again tomorrow.”
That became their phrase.
One Friday, Dr. Brooks tested Lily with forearm crutches.
Alexander stood near the wall.
Noah sat beside him.
Lily planted the crutches.
Shifted her weight.
Moved her right foot.
Then left.
One step.
She froze.
Alexander forgot how to breathe.
Lily looked at Noah.
He whispered:
“Again tomorrow.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
Alexander’s heart dropped.
Then she smiled.
“Again now.”
Second step.
Third.
Her knee buckled.
Dr. Brooks caught her safely.
Lily burst into tears.
Not from pain.
From rage.
“I almost had it.”
Dr. Brooks knelt.
“You had three steps.”
“I fell.”
“You were caught.”
“That’s not walking.”
Noah spoke softly.
“It’s more walking than yesterday.”
Lily looked at him.
Then laughed through tears.
Alexander pressed his fist to his mouth.
That night, Rachel called.
The hospital’s internal review had reached a preliminary conclusion.
Maya Reed’s termination was procedurally improper.
Her concerns were clinically reasonable.
Her record would be corrected.
Noah stood when Alexander told him.
“Really?”
“Really.”
He cried silently.
Teresa held him.
Alexander thought that was the end of what Noah wanted.
He was wrong.
Noah wiped his face.
“Then tell everyone.”
Rachel smiled.
“We will.”
But before the hospital could issue the statement, Mercer held a press conference.
He claimed Alexander was using wealth and influence to destroy a doctor because his daughter’s recovery had not happened fast enough.
Reporters repeated it.
By morning, headlines called it:
THE BILLIONAIRE’S REVENGE.
Then Mercer released one edited clip.
Maya telling Lily:
“Push harder.”
No context.
No standing.
No smiles.
May you like
Just a tired child crying.
And suddenly, Maya Reed looked cruel.
