Chapter 7 - The Boy Who Wanted NothingAlexander offered Teresa a hotel.

She refused twice.

Accepted the third time because Noah was falling asleep sitting upright.

Then Alexander offered money.

Noah woke immediately.

“No.”

Alexander blinked.

“No?”

“I didn’t come for money.”

“I know.”

“You think I came because you’re rich.”

“I didn’t say that.”

“Everyone does.”

Teresa touched his shoulder.

“Noah.”

But he kept going.

“My mom wanted Lily’s dad to know the truth. That’s all.”

Alexander sat across from him.

“What do you want?”

Noah stared at the hospital floor.

“My mom’s name fixed.”

That answer hurt more than anything else.

Mercer had called Maya unstable.

The hospital had recorded her termination as professional misconduct.

Noah had lived six months believing the last official thing attached to his mother’s career was a lie.

Alexander looked at Rachel.

“Can we reopen it?”

“Yes.”

“Do it.”

Noah looked up.

“You mean it?”

“Yes.”

Then Lily rolled into the room from therapy.

Sweaty.

Exhausted.

Smiling.

She lifted her right foot two inches.

Noah grinned.

“Again.”

Lily did it again.

Alexander almost told him not to coach her.

Then he stopped himself.

Noah was not pretending to be a therapist.

He was being her friend.

That distinction mattered.

Over the next week, Lily began active rehabilitation.

Standing frame.

Supported transfers.

Muscle work.

Pain.

Tears.

Progress measured in inches.

No miracles.

No ballroom fantasy.

But progress.

One afternoon, Lily stood between parallel bars for nine seconds.

Noah counted.

“Seven, eight, nine—”

She dropped back into the chair laughing.

Alexander turned away so she would not see him cry.

Then Rachel entered the therapy room.

“We have a problem.”

Mercer’s attorneys had filed an emergency complaint.

Against Maya Reed.

Posthumously.

They claimed the video was illegally recorded and medically misleading.

They also accused Noah of stealing protected patient information.

Teresa went pale.

“He’s ten.”

Rachel nodded.

“He’s trying to scare you.”

Noah looked at the floor.

Alexander stood.

“Then he picked the wrong family to scare.”

Noah looked up.

Alexander realized what he had said.

May you like

Family.

For a second, no one corrected him.
