For seven months, everyone told me my wife had abandoned us.
Everyone except my eight-year-old daughter.
“Daddy… Mommy didn’t leave.”
I thought Emma was holding on to hope.
Then one afternoon, she came running through Vanessa’s restaurant, crying so hard she could barely speak.
“Daddy! Mommy called me!”
She pointed toward the back hallway.
At the end of it stood a huge industrial freezer with a heavy padlock.
“She said she’s behind the cold door.”
Vanessa immediately tried to stop her.
“Emma, don’t touch that!”
But my daughter grabbed a metal tenderizer and smashed the lock.
Then—
THUMP.
Something moved behind the freezer door.
Vanessa went pale.
“Nobody opens that door.”
That was when I remembered something terrifying.
Vanessa had been the last person to see my wife before she disappeared.
Emma swung again.
CRACK.
The lock broke.
Cold air rushed into the hallway.
And from somewhere inside the darkness, a weak woman’s voice whispered:
“Emma…?”
My daughter froze.
