Chapter 14 - The Ledger

Maria Reed returned under federal protection.

She was sixty-two, small, sharp-eyed, and far less fragile than the story built around her disappearance.

Lucas saw her through a hospital-room window and collapsed into a chair.

Maria refused to see him.

Not yet.

She did agree to meet Claire.

The two women sat across from each other in a secure conference room, connected by a place neither had ever chosen to know.

Maria brought a black accounting ledger wrapped in plastic.

Inside were handwritten payments dating back nearly twenty years.

Bribes.

Shell companies.

Insurance money from the warehouse fire.

Payments to Peter Sloan.

Payments to city inspectors.

And, much more recently, payments to Vanessa and Lucas.

At the bottom of one page was a notation from eight months earlier.

C.M. REMOVAL - PHASE ONE.

Claire stared at it.

“I was a project.”

Maria’s voice was quiet.

“To Voss, everyone is.”

The ledger also showed something I did not expect.

A recurring payment to someone inside Mercer Food Holdings.

Initials only.

R.K.

My CFO, Robert Klein.

The man who had sat beside me two nights earlier acting shocked by the debt transfers.

Ortiz moved immediately.

Robert’s office was empty.

His home was empty.

But unlike Voss, Robert had not escaped.

Security cameras showed him entering our main distribution center twenty minutes earlier.

Claire looked at me.

“What’s at the distribution center?”

I felt cold.

“The original server room.”

Every contract before our cloud migration had been archived there.

Including old debt records.

Including the trust.

Including whatever evidence Robert had spent years helping Voss manipulate.

I called security.

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang from the distribution center’s emergency line.

I picked up.

A man was breathing hard.

“Mr. Mercer,” he whispered. “Your CFO just locked us out of the server room.”

In the background, an alarm began to scream.

“He set a fire.”
