Chapter 18 - The Last Trap

Our house was empty.

That saved us.

Bomb technicians found an incendiary device hidden inside the basement electrical panel. It was designed to destroy the house, not explode outward.

Destroy records.

Destroy computers.

Destroy whatever Voss feared we might still have.

But he made one mistake.

Claire had not kept the evidence at home.

Weeks before her disappearance, she had mailed copies of the suspicious financial documents to a safe-deposit box under Emma’s middle name.

She had forgotten about it after months in captivity.

The key was still taped behind a framed picture in our bedroom.

Inside the box, police found everything.

Original vendor invoices.

Email printouts.

Bank statements.

And a handwritten note Claire had prepared for me.

Daniel,

If I am wrong, I will laugh about this later. If I am right, trust Emma. She notices what adults ignore.

I had to stop reading.

Emma pressed against my side.

“What did Mommy mean?”

“She meant you’re smarter than all of us.”

Claire smiled from across the table.

“She meant exactly that.”

The evidence broke the case open.

Voss was charged federally with conspiracy, kidnapping, fraud, attempted evidence destruction, and multiple financial crimes. Peter Sloan agreed to testify. Robert Klein did too.

Lucas faced charges but provided information that helped recover Maria’s stolen assets.

Vanessa was charged with kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, fraud, assault, and conspiracy.

Before arraignment, Vanessa asked to speak with Claire.

Claire refused.

Then Vanessa sent a handwritten note.

It contained only one sentence.

I am sorry I believed being afraid of him made what I did to you less evil.

Claire read it once.

Then tore it in half.

But the legal case was not the final battle.

The next morning, a family-court clerk called me.

The temporary guardianship petition for Emma had been filed.

Not months ago.

Yesterday.
