Chapter 1 - THE BACKYARD WENT SILENT

Lily did not scream when she saw me.
That was the first thing that terrified me.
I stepped through the back door with a small gift bag in one hand, expecting to surprise my eight-year-old daughter at what Vanessa had called a "little family garden party." Instead, the laughter died so fast I could hear water dripping from Lily's dress onto the stone patio.
She stood in the middle of the lawn, soaked from head to toe. Pink ribbon circled her wrists. A decorative chain hung loosely around the outside of her yellow dress. Half a dozen adults still had their phones raised.
And my wife was holding an empty glass pitcher.
The gift bag fell from my hand.
"Dad?" Lily whispered.
I crossed the lawn without feeling my feet.
"Who did this to you?"
She looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa gave a tight laugh. "Daniel, don't overreact. It was a game. She lost."
I knelt in front of Lily and untied the ribbon. Her fingers were cold.
"A game?" I said.
One of Vanessa's friends lowered her phone.
"It was just for fun," she murmured.
Lily flinched when I lifted the chain away from her dress.
That tiny movement hit me harder than any answer.
"Did anyone ask her if this was fun?"
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa stepped closer. "She has been impossible lately. I was teaching her not to lie."
Lily's eyes snapped toward me, wide and frightened.
"I didn't lie," she said.
I took off my jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders.
"You're coming inside with me."
Vanessa's voice sharpened. "Daniel, we have guests."
I turned around.
"Then they can watch me take care of my daughter."
Lily clung to my hand all the way to the door. Just before we went inside, she whispered so softly I almost missed it.
"Dad, please don't make me stay alone with her tonight."
I stopped.
"Why would you think I would?"
Lily looked back at the people on the lawn.

Then she said the sentence that split my life into before and after.
"Because every time I tried to tell you, she said you already chose her."
