Chapter 12 - THE SAFE DEPOSIT BOX

The guardianship petition claimed my travel schedule made me unavailable and Lily's emotional instability made Vanessa the only reliable parent in the home.
It also requested authority over "educational and therapeutic disbursements" from Lily's trust.
There it was.
Money wearing the costume of concern.
But the petition had never been filed.
"Why prepare it and stop?" I asked.
Rebecca tapped the date.
"Because something changed."
The date was two days after my father announced he was selling a commercial property connected to Lily's trust. The sale would create a large cash reserve.
Vanessa had learned about it at dinner.
The next week, she opened a safe deposit box at a bank downtown.
We knew because Graham Pike's voice memo referenced "the box."
The bank would not let me access Vanessa's box, but they confirmed I was listed as a co-renter.
I had never signed that either.
Rebecca obtained an emergency court order preserving the contents.
Two days later, we opened it with a bank officer present.
Inside were copies of Lily's trust documents, my saved signature image on a USB drive, blank notarized forms, and a prepaid phone.
The phone contained messages between Vanessa and Graham.
One read:
Once she's at Briarwood, Daniel will stop asking questions. He hates conflict.
Another:
If Lily keeps telling people, we need her credibility gone before the hearing.
I stared at the words.
"What hearing?"
Rebecca scrolled.
There was a calendar screenshot for September 18.
TRUSTEE REVIEW - MERCER TRUST COMPANY.
Vanessa planned to challenge my management of Lily's trust and replace me as trustee.
With herself as guardian, she could argue she should control distributions.
Then we found the last message.
Graham: What if Daniel comes home early?
Vanessa: He never does.
I read it three times.
The entire plan had depended on the version of me Vanessa understood best.
Busy.
Predictable.
Easy to manage.
Then Rebecca opened a folder on the USB drive labeled EVIDENCE - DANIEL.

Inside were dozens of edited audio clips.
Every one was designed to make me sound like a father who did not want his daughter.
