I came home early to surprise my eight-year-old daughter.
Instead, I found her standing in the backyard soaked from head to toe, pink ribbon around her wrists, a decorative chain hanging over her dress—
while grown adults stood around filming.
My wife was holding the empty pitcher.
“Dad?” Lily whispered.
I ran to her, removed the ribbon, wrapped my jacket around her shoulders, and asked:
“Who did this to you?”
She didn’t answer.
She only looked at my wife.
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“It was just a game. She lost.”
But when I tried to take Lily inside, she grabbed my hand and whispered:
“Dad… please don’t make me stay alone with her tonight.”
My heart stopped.
“Why would you think I would?”
Lily looked back at the people in the yard.
Then she said the sentence that changed everything:
“Because every time I tried to tell you… she said you already chose her.”
