Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN IN BLUE SCRUBS

Hannah’s blood pressure alarm began beeping before anyone touched her.

“My daughter?”

“Safe,” the nurse said quickly. “Security stopped the transport at the service elevator.”

“Who took her?”

“A woman in neonatal transport scrubs. Fake credentials.”

Dominic was already on his phone.

“No one leaves the building,” he said.

The hospital attorney snapped, “Your people do not run this hospital.”

Dominic looked at her. “Then yours should start running it faster.”

Hannah pushed aside her blanket.

The nurse protested. “You can’t stand yet.”

“I’m going to my babies.”

Her legs shook when they touched the floor. Pain ripped across her abdomen. Dominic reached for her elbow, but Hannah pulled away.

“I can walk.”

He nodded once. “Then I’ll walk beside you.”

They reached the NICU behind two nurses and a security officer.

Through the glass, tiny Noah slept beneath blue-white lights. Lily’s entire hand could barely wrap around Hannah’s fingertip.

Hannah cried without sound.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I’m so sorry.”

Dominic stood several feet away, giving her the privacy Bradley never had.

A detective named Mara Chen arrived twenty minutes later.

“We caught the woman in the parking garage,” Chen said. “She’s refusing to identify who hired her.”

“Show me her picture,” Hannah said.

Chen hesitated, then turned her phone around.

Hannah knew the face.

“Kelsey?”

Dominic looked over.

“Kelsey who?”

“Bradley’s cousin. She was at our house last Christmas.”

Detective Chen’s expression changed.

“Interesting. She told us she had never met you.”

Hannah looked through the NICU glass again.

Bradley’s betrayal no longer felt romantic or financial.

It felt organized.

Then Chen added, “There’s something else. The fake transport order listed one destination.”

“Where?”

“A private clinic in Providence.”

Dominic’s face hardened.

Hannah saw it.

“You know the place.”

“Yes.”

“Who owns it?”

May you like

Dominic’s voice dropped.

“My brother.”
