Chapter 15 - CHRISTMAS DINNER

On Christmas evening, Shawn refused to let crime take the entire holiday.
He rented a private room at the hotel restaurant.
Maria insisted on wearing the same purple cardigan she had worn in the basement.
âWhy?â Shawn asked gently.
âSo I remember I got out.â
Don wore a borrowed red tie and complained that it made him look like a politician.
For the first time in twelve years, Shawn ate Christmas dinner with them.
There were empty chairs.
One belonged to Brenda.
No one mentioned it for almost an hour.
Then Maria did.
âI still love her.â
Shawn looked down.
Don sighed.
âSo do I.â
âHow?â Shawn asked.
Mariaâs eyes filled.
âLove doesnât stop because someone becomes terrible. Trust does.â
Shawn nodded slowly.
That distinction mattered.
After dinner, Don gave Shawn a small wrapped package.
Inside was the missing button from his old gray sweater.
Shawn laughed.
âYou kept this?â
âYour mother keeps everything.â
Maria protested. âNot everything.â
Don raised an eyebrow. âThereâs a drawer full of twist ties from 1998.â
They laughed again.
Then Don became serious.
âYou remember what I told you when you left home?â
Shawn did.
âYou donât have to become rich. Just become a man you can live with.â
Don nodded.
âYou did all right.â
Shawnâs throat tightened.
âI wasnât here.â
âYou are now.â
His phone rang.
Ortiz.
âWe found Denise Holloway.â
âWhere?â
âAt Hawthorne Care.â
Shawn stood.
âWhy was she there?â
A pause.
âDestroying records.â
âDid you stop her?â
âYes. But we found something else.â
âWhat?â
âFour rooms with locks on the outside.â
Shawnâs stomach turned.
âAnd medication logs for at least nine elderly people.â

The scheme had not begun with his parents.
They were simply the latest victims.
