Chapter 17 - THE FAMILY SECRET

Shawn thought he had misheard.
Maria sat down heavily in the grocery office.
Don closed the safe.
âBrenda doesnât know.â
Shawn stared at them.
âThen who does?â
âMaybe Mark now.â
âWhen Shawn was born,â Maria whispered, âwe promised the past would stay buried.â
Shawn felt no anger toward Brenda over that secret.
Only fear about how Mark might use it.
âWhy keep proof?â
Don answered, âMedical history. Her biological father had a hereditary heart condition.â
The envelope contained letters and a certified record naming the man.
It had nothing to do with inheritance.
Legally, Brenda was Donâs daughter.
But Mark would not care about legal nuance if the secret could break her emotionally or destroy the family publicly.
Ortiz traced the break-in to a pickup truck captured on a gas station camera.
The truck belonged to Markâs cousin, Eric Dalton.
Eric was arrested that afternoon.
He admitted Mark had asked him weeks earlier to steal âfamily papersâ if anything went wrong.
The papers were recovered from Ericâs garage.
Brenda learned the truth from her attorney before Shawn could tell her.
She requested another visit.
This time, when Shawn sat behind the glass, she looked different.
Not angry.
Empty.
âIs it true?â
âYes.â
âSo Dad isnât my father.â
Shawn leaned closer.
âHe is your father.â
âYou know what I mean.â
âYes.â
She started crying silently.
âDid they love you more because you were really his?â
âNo.â
âYou donât know that.â
âI do.â
âHow?â
âBecause after everything you did, Dad still asked Ortiz if you were safe in jail.â
Brenda looked at him.
Shawn continued.
âHe still calls you his daughter.â
Her face collapsed.
For the first time since he came home, Brenda did not blame Mark, money, their parents, or Shawn.

She whispered, âWhat did I do?â
And Shawn had no answer that could save her from it.
