Chapter 16 - HAWTHORNE CARE

Hawthorne Care looked abandoned from the road.

Inside, investigators found evidence of something far worse.

Families had paid Peter Vale and a network of caretakers to “manage” elderly relatives who were supposedly difficult or incompetent.

Some residents had legitimate medical needs.

Others had been isolated while relatives took control of their money.

False evaluations from Dr. Mercer appeared in seven files.

Denise Holloway had notarized documents in five.

Mark had transported two residents.

Brenda’s parents were scheduled to become numbers eight and nine.

Still, the publicity brought calls.

A woman from another county recognized Peter Vale’s name.

A man said his aunt lost her house after being declared incompetent.

Another family claimed their grandfather vanished into private care after signing documents he could not remember.

Within forty-eight hours, state investigators joined the case.

Peter Vale began negotiating.

He offered records in exchange for leniency.

Dr. Mercer was arrested in Florida.

Denise agreed to cooperate.

Mark refused.

He insisted Brenda planned everything.

Then prosecutors played Don’s recordings.

His lawyer asked for a break.

Shawn sat beside his parents at a preliminary hearing.

Mark looked across the courtroom at him and smiled.

Not warmly.

A threat disguised as confidence.

During recess, a bailiff handed Shawn a folded note found beneath his chair.

YOU THINK YOU SAVED THEM.

CHECK THE STORE.

Shawn showed Ortiz.

They drove to Miller Grocery immediately.

The front door was unlocked.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

Then Don pointed toward the back office.

The old wall safe stood open.

Inside, all the cash was gone.

But money was not what made Don curse.

The family’s original will was missing.

So was a sealed envelope Don had once told no one about.

Shawn looked at his father.

“What was in the envelope?”

May you like

Don’s face went pale.

“Proof Brenda isn’t my biological daughter.”
