Chapter 10 - The Night Noah Recorded Her

Noah had one more secret.

He waited until Daniel tucked Emma in.

Then he brought out an old tablet.

“I recorded Aunt Rachel once.”

Daniel stared.

“When?”

Noah opened the voice memo app.

One file.

Eleven minutes.

Rachel’s voice filled the room.

Noah: “Emma is hungry.”

“She had dinner.”

“She didn’t.”

“She threw it.”

“She dropped it.”

A pause.

Then Rachel said:

“You want your dad to lose his job because he has to come home every time you call?”

Noah sniffed.

“No.”

“You want him to get sick?”

“No.”

“Then stop.”

Daniel clenched his fists.

The recording continued.

Noah asked, “Why don’t you like us?”

Rachel laughed.

Then:

“One day your dad is going to realize he can’t do everything. When that happens, I’ll be the one deciding what happens to you.”

Daniel felt cold.

Susan listened twice.

Rachel was on a phone call.

She thought Noah had left.

A man’s voice was faint.

Rachel said:

“He’s still resisting.”

Pause.

“No, Daniel doesn’t suspect anything.”

Another pause.

“If custody opens, the trust becomes accessible for care.”

Daniel looked at Susan.

Proof.

Rachel said:

“I know what I’m doing.”

Then the recording ended.

Noah whispered, “I hid under the table.”

Daniel looked at his son.

“I wanted proof.”

The words hit him hard.

An eight-year-old had learned the same lesson Daniel had learned too late.

Truth without evidence could be ignored.

Daniel pulled him close.

Noah started crying.

Daniel held him tighter.

The next morning, police traced Rachel’s phone records from the timestamp.

One outgoing call.

To Thomas Bell.

Daniel knew the name.

Thomas was Laura’s cousin.

And co-trustee of the children’s money.
