Chapter 11 - The Trustee

Thomas Bell arrived with a lawyer.
He denied everything.
At first.
Then police played Noah’s recording.
Thomas’s face changed.
Afterward, Thomas admitted speaking to Rachel.
“Why?” Detective Harris asked.
“She said Daniel was struggling.”
“Did you verify that?”
“No.”
“Did you discuss temporary guardianship?”
Thomas hesitated.
“Yes.”
Daniel stared through the interview-room glass.
Laura had trusted this man.
So had he.
Thomas continued.
“Rachel said Daniel was drinking.”
“Did you see him drunk?”
“No.”
“Did you hear it?”
“No.”
“She said Noah wanted to live with her.”
“Did you talk to Noah?”
“No.”
Harris leaned forward.
“So every fact came from Rachel.”
Thomas looked down.
“Yes.”
“Then why help?”
Thomas swallowed.
“Because I thought Daniel was losing control.”
That answer sounded too easy.
Thomas had personal debt too.
And three months earlier, Rachel had transferred him $7,500.
His face drained.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Thomas had helped.
Maybe for money.
Maybe because he believed Rachel.
Maybe both.
They found email drafts between Rachel and Thomas discussing “care distributions.”
One message:
Once temporary guardianship is granted, emergency housing request should be approved quickly.
Another:
Daniel’s work schedule supports incapacity argument.
Daniel felt sick.
Everything he did to support his kids had become evidence he could not care for them.
Then Thomas made an offer.
Full cooperation.
He would give police the files Rachel sent him.
Photos.
Forms.
Fake statements.
A draft petition.
And one video.
Rachel speaking directly into the camera.
“If Daniel comes home early, we stop everything.”
Daniel replayed it.
What was “everything”?
The video had metadata.
Recorded two hours before Daniel walked in and found Emma on the floor.

Whatever happened at the stairs had not been random.
It had been part of a plan.
