Chapter 5 - The Note Noah Never Wrote

Noah stared at the scan.

“I didn’t write that.”

Daniel believed him.

Megan did too.

But the handwriting looked close.

Childlike.

Uneven.

Noah pointed at one word.

Daniel looked.

He was right.

Susan said, “Someone imitated him.”

Noah’s face hardened.

“Aunt Rachel practices my handwriting.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

“That’s normal,” Daniel said.

Megan looked at Susan.

The room changed.

They searched the cabinet Rachel used for school papers.

Inside were Noah’s old spelling tests.

Pages of traced words.

And several sheets where someone had copied his handwriting.

Daniel had to walk outside.

He stood on the porch until the urge to break something passed.

When he came back, Emma was coloring.

Noah sat beside her.

His son looked up.

“Are we in trouble?”

“No.”

“Are you?”

That question hurt.

“No.”

Susan answered more carefully.

“Your dad is getting help from adults whose job is to protect families.”

Noah nodded.

Then said, “Aunt Rachel said she knows judges.”

Daniel looked at Susan.

“Does she?”

Susan frowned.

Rachel worked as an administrative assistant at a private law office.

Not family court.

But she knew lawyers.

Clerks.

Processes.

Daniel checked his email.

Attached were photos.

Daniel drinking a beer on the patio.

Daniel asleep on the couch.

Daniel arguing on the phone.

Then one image showed Noah crying while Daniel held his shoulders.

Daniel whispered, “She’s been documenting me.”

Susan said, “Save everything.”

“Mr. Carter?”

“Yes.”

“We received an emergency report regarding your children.”

Daniel’s stomach dropped.

“From who?”

“I can’t disclose that.”

Behind him, Noah whispered:

“Aunt Rachel said they would come if we didn’t listen.”
