Chapter 10 - MARA CALDWELL

The man arrested at Hawthorne was not Mara.

He was carrying her badge.

His name was Seth Nolan, an operations manager who reported directly to Richard.

He refused to talk.

But the badge was real.

Naomi found that Mara Caldwell's credentials had been reactivated six months after her disappearance and used thirty-two times inside Whitmore facilities.

Somebody had been keeping her identity alive.

Adrian asked Alice.

His aunt looked terrified.

"Mara isn't missing."

"Where is she?"

"Richard put her somewhere."

"What does that mean?"

Alice explained that Mara contacted her after Daniel died. She said she had proof Daniel's fall was not caused by equipment failure.

Before Alice could arrange a meeting, Richard appeared at her home.

Two days later, Alice was admitted to psychiatric care after an alleged breakdown.

"He told everyone I was confused," she said. "Then he took my phone."

Adrian felt sick.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Alice's eyes flashed.

"You believed him."

He had no defense.

Marissa sat beside her.

"Did Mara say what proof she had?"

"A recording."

That night, Naomi traced Mara's reactivated badge use to a Whitmore-owned medical residence in New Hampshire.

Private.

No public website.

Adrian, Marissa, and Ortiz drove there with a warrant team.

Mara Caldwell was alive.

She sat in a quiet room overlooking pine trees.

Her medical chart listed severe delusional disorder.

She looked at Adrian and laughed.

"Another Whitmore."

Marissa stepped forward.

"I'm Daniel Keane's wife."

Mara's face changed.

"Daniel's dead?"

Marissa went still.

"You didn't know?"

Mara began shaking.

"They told me he took the money and left."

Ortiz asked who "they" were.

Mara looked at Adrian.

"Your uncle."

Then she pointed to the hem of her old winter coat hanging in the closet.

"He never found the recorder."
