Chapter 8 - THE SECOND ENVELOPE

Graham Bell did not deny it.
He sat in his downtown office with both hands flat on the desk.
"There was another envelope."
Marissa stared at him.
"You had my husband's belongings?"
"Richard had me collect anything related to the trust before the police released the rest."
"That's theft."
"Yes."
The word landed harder because Graham did not defend himself.
He opened a safe.
Inside was a sealed white envelope with Adrian's name on it.
Daniel's handwriting.
Adrian opened it.
Adrian,
If you're reading this, I either lost my nerve or ran out of time.
I am your brother.
Adrian stopped.
Marissa covered her mouth.
The letter continued.
I don't want your house, your title, or your chair at the board table. I want you to know what they are pouring into buildings with your name on them.
Daniel described Harbor Point, the shell supplier, and falsified lab tests.
Then he named the person helping him.
Mara Caldwell.
Adrian frowned.
"Caldwell?"
Graham nodded.
"Daughter of the supplier's founder."
Marissa said, "Why would she help Daniel expose her own company?"
"Because she said Richard was using her father's company name after it had already shut down."
The real material came from cheaper regional plants. Caldwell was just a cover.
Daniel had arranged to meet Mara the morning after his death.
She never showed.
"Where is she?" Adrian asked.
Graham looked grim.
"Nobody knows. She disappeared fourteen months ago."
Adrian kept reading.
The final paragraph made him sit back.
If anything happens to me, do not trust the accident report. My harness was inspected yesterday. I photographed the serial number.
Attached was a picture.
Graham pulled up the official accident report.
The harness recovered after Daniel's fall had a different serial number.
Marissa whispered, "Someone switched it."
Adrian looked at Graham.
"Who controlled the site after the fall?"
May you like
Graham answered.
"Richard's security team."
