Chapter 12 - THE BOARDROOM

Reporters filled the sidewalk outside Whitmore headquarters.

By eight, Marissa's face was on television.

HOUSEKEEPER AT CENTER OF WHITMORE SUCCESSION WAR.

Adrian wanted to issue a statement defending her.

Marissa stopped him.

"Don't make me a woman you rescued."

He looked at her.

"Then what do I say?"

"Say my husband was your brother. Say he died after reporting safety fraud. Say the board can explain the rest."

So he did.

At nine, Adrian entered the boardroom with Naomi, Graham, and Detective Ortiz waiting outside.

Richard sat at the far end.

"You've lost perspective," he said.

Adrian placed Daniel's letter on the table.

"No. I found it."

Directors shifted.

Adrian disclosed Daniel's paternity, the trust clause, the falsified materials, Mara's confinement, and the switched harness.

Richard called it emotional theater.

Then Adrian played the recording.

You should have stayed invisible.

The room changed.

One director stood.

Another demanded counsel.

Richard remained calm.

"Nothing on that recording proves I killed anyone."

Adrian nodded.

"You're right."

Richard smiled slightly.

Adrian continued.

"That's why police are searching your security company right now."

The smile disappeared.

Naomi entered with a fresh message.

Investigators had found archived work orders from the morning of Daniel's fall.

One instruction ordered a security technician to replace a damaged fall-arrest harness after the scene had already been photographed.

Approved by Richard Whitmore.

Richard stood.

"I want my lawyer."

Graham said quietly, "I'm not your lawyer anymore."

Richard looked at him with pure hatred.

Then the boardroom doors opened.

Detective Ortiz walked in.

"Richard Whitmore, we need to speak with you regarding obstruction, unlawful confinement, and evidence tampering."

Richard turned to Adrian.

"If I fall, your father falls with me."

Adrian's chest tightened.

"What does that mean?"

Richard smiled.

"Ask Graham who ordered Daniel's first background investigation."

Every eye turned to the family attorney.

Graham closed his eyes.

"Thomas did."
