Chapter 16 - The Real Motive

Rebecca had lost a son.

Richard had lost a son.

Neither had ever told me.

That did not explain murder.

Then Marcus found the messages.

After the baby's death, Rebecca became convinced a hospital error was responsible. Richard blamed himself for leaving her during the pregnancy. Their relationship collapsed.

Years later, he married me.

But he never truly ended contact with her.

When I became pregnant, Rebecca reappeared.

Her messages to Richard were obsessive.

You get a family while I got a grave.

Then later:

If Amelia is gone, the child is yours. We can raise her the way we should have raised him.

I had to stop reading.

Richard's replies began hesitant.

Then practical.

Then monstrous.

We need control of the company first.

We need the papers clean.

We need no custody fight.

My fortune had been the incentive.

My baby had become the prize.

Rebecca's grief had curdled into entitlement. Richard's guilt had become a tool she could use. But the messages also showed something more disturbing: he had not simply been manipulated. He had repeatedly chosen the easier lie, the larger payout, the cleaner path to control. Every time Rebecca pushed, he moved closer because some part of him already wanted what she was offering.

There was one message from Richard I read three times. Amelia trusts me completely. That is the problem and the solution. I had once believed trust was what made a marriage safe. In his hands, it had become access: to my house, my records, my mother, my company, my body. I closed the file and promised myself my daughter would grow up learning that love without boundaries was not love at all.

The sheriff issued warrants for both of them.

That afternoon, I received a video call from an unknown number.

Rebecca appeared on the screen.

Behind her, Richard sat tied to a chair.

Blood marked his forehead.

I stared.

Rebecca smiled.

"Your husband changed his mind."

Richard lifted his head.

"Amelia, don't listen to her."

Rebecca slapped duct tape across his mouth.

"He says he loves you now. Isn't that touching?"

"What do you want?"

May you like

Her eyes dropped toward my stomach.

"The child he promised me."
