Chapter 18 - Daniel's Last Move

Daniel stepped from the hallway holding a second gun.

He was supposed to be under guard.

Later, we learned a bribed transport officer had helped him escape.

At that moment, all I knew was that my brother was pointing a weapon at me.

"Move away from the case," he said.

Rebecca looked furious.

"You weren't invited."

"Neither were you."

Richard stared between them.

The conspiracy had finally eaten itself.

Daniel wanted the company.

Rebecca wanted my baby.

Richard had believed he could control both.

He had been wrong about everyone.

"You planned Dad's death too?" I asked.

Daniel's face changed.

That was answer enough.

My father had died of a sudden heart attack after months of unexplained illness.

Marcus had always found the timing suspicious but never proved anything.

Daniel smiled bitterly.

"Dad was never going to give me what was mine."

My wire was transmitting every word.

I only needed to keep him talking.

"So you killed him?"

"I sped up what was already happening."

Richard made a sound of horror.

Daniel turned toward him.

"Don't act moral now."

That distraction saved us.

Richard kicked the chair sideways into Rebecca. Her gun fired into the ceiling.

I dropped behind the stone fireplace.

Outside, police moved.

Daniel grabbed the document case and ran toward the terrace.

Rebecca lunged after him.

A second shot cracked.

Then everything went silent.

When I looked up, Richard was on the floor.

Blood spread across his shirt.
