Chapter 19 - What Richard Said

The police stormed the estate.
Daniel was arrested on the terrace.
Rebecca was taken alive after dropping her weapon near the cliffs.
Richard had been shot in the shoulder, not the chest.
He survived.
At the hospital, he asked to see me.
I almost refused.
Then I remembered the questions still hanging over my father's death.
Richard looked smaller in the hospital bed.
For the first time since I met him, there was no charm left.
"I loved you," he said.
"You pushed me out of a helicopter."
He started crying.
"I know."
"You don't get to place love beside that sentence."
He looked away.
Then he told me everything.
Daniel had approached him years earlier after learning about Richard's debts. He offered money for information about my trust. Rebecca later joined them. Each step made the next easier.
Richard insisted he did not help kill my father, but he knew Daniel had tampered with medications.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because by then I was already guilty of too much."
That was the closest he came to honesty.
Before I left, he asked one question.
"Will you tell our daughter anything good about me?"
I stood in the doorway.
"I'll tell her the truth when she's old enough. And I'll make sure she knows that what you did was never her fault."
Weeks later, Daniel was charged in connection with our father's death. Rebecca faced kidnapping, conspiracy, fraud, and attempted murder charges. Richard accepted a plea that included a long prison sentence and full cooperation.

Then, two months before my due date, labor started early.
And suddenly none of the trials mattered.
