Chapter 11 - The Account in My Name

I had never known the account existed.

Three million dollars entered it fifteen years ago.

Then moved out in five transfers.

All before I turned eighteen.

RESTITUTION RESERVE - MERCER MATTER.

My father had not taken a payoff.

He had forced Charles to deposit money into an account held in my name because he did not trust Hartwell to keep it available.

Then he moved it into a segregated reserve inside Bennett Capital.

I called her.

She did not answer.

I sent one message.

The money wasn't a payoff. My father kept restitution for your family. It's still there.

Ten minutes later, she called.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I have the records."

"Why didn't anyone tell us?"

My father died before settling the claim.

Evelyn Hartwell knew only parts.

Charles hid the ledger.

Alan Mercer died believing he was disgraced.

Sienna grew up with a lie.

Silence did the rest.

We met the next morning.

I gave her copies.

She read every page.

Then she cried so quietly I pretended to study the window.

"My father thought nobody believed him."

"I know."

"No, you don't."

She was right.

I didn't.

But I could stop defending people who failed him.

"The reserve is yours if the legal claim supports it," I said.

She looked at me.

"You'd give up nine million dollars?"

"It's not mine."

That afternoon, the Hartwell board received the ledger.

Three directors resigned within two hours.

Lenders demanded an independent investigation.

Charles disappeared.

Julian's phone went dead.

Evelyn called me, terrified.

"He took the lake house car."

"Who?"

"Charles."

"Was Julian with him?"

"No."

Then Naomi came into my office holding a printed email.

It had been sent from Charles's account to Julian one hour earlier.

YOU CREATED THIS MESS. FIX YOUR WIFE OR I WILL.

Below it was an address.

An old Hartwell hotel property in the Catskills.

Sienna read it.

"That's where my father worked before he was fired."

May you like

Then Julian's second phone started ringing.

Charles was calling.
