Chapter 14 - Julian's Brother

Julian had an older brother named Daniel.

Now he told the truth.

He had been driving.

Daniel had been drinking.

They argued.

Julian looked down for two seconds.

The car crossed the center line.

Daniel died.

Julian survived.

He pressured a local officer to remove the fact that Daniel had grabbed the steering wheel during the argument.

Why?

Because Daniel had cocaine in his system.

Hartwell was negotiating a major hotel deal.

Charles wanted the family name clean.

"So he helped you," I said.

Julian shook his head.

"He owned me."

Every time Julian resisted him, Charles brought up the original report.

The hidden toxicology.

The officer's payment.

"If it came out, I thought I'd be charged."

Naomi said, "Maybe. Maybe not. But that's why you get a lawyer instead of committing new crimes."

Julian nodded.

"I know."

I watched him.

For the first time, I understood the difference between explanation and excuse.

His fear was real.

So were his choices.

He still forged my name.

He still invaded my medical privacy.

He still brought Sienna onto our honeymoon to pressure me into signing.

"I feel sorry for what your father did to you," I said.

Hope flashed across his face.

I finished.

"And I'm still leaving you."

The hope disappeared.

"I know."

Charles was arrested the next day at Teterboro Airport.

He had cash.

Two passports.

And a encrypted drive containing Hartwell records.

He did not go quietly.

He blamed Julian.

Sienna.

My father.

Me.

Everyone except himself.

When agents searched the drive, they found years of payments to consultants, shell companies, and private investigators.

One investigator had been assigned to me before Julian and I ever met.

Photos.

Travel records.

Friends.

Previous relationships.

My life had been studied.

Naomi scrolled through the dates.

The first surveillance photo was taken five years earlier.

Two months before Julian introduced himself at a charity gala.

I looked at Julian.

"Was that meeting planned?"

He closed his eyes.

May you like

"Yes."

And that was the moment my marriage truly ended.
