Chapter 3 - The Phone in the Drawer

Julian kept an old desk in our shared home office.

Bottom drawer.

Locked.

I had never opened it.

The lock popped with a small screwdriver.

Inside was a black phone.

No passcode.

That surprised me.

Then I understood why.

It had no personal contacts.

No family photos.

No normal messages.

Just Sienna.

Hundreds of texts.

Not romantic.

Worse.

A message from Sienna three months earlier:

SHE STILL DOESN'T KNOW ABOUT THE CONVERSION RIGHT?

Julian:

NO. CHARLES SAYS KEEP IT THAT WAY UNTIL AFTER THE WEDDING.

Sienna:

AND MAUI?

Julian:

WE GET THE SPOUSAL CONSENT SIGNED THERE.

My hands went cold.

Naomi read over my shoulder.

"There it is."

The Maui document was not a harmless refinancing consent.

It pledged Bennett Capital's interest in a private note as security for Hartwell Hospitality's ninety-six-million-dollar bridge loan.

If Hartwell defaulted, my family company could lose control of its largest asset.

I scrolled farther.

Sienna:

WHAT IF SHE READS IT?

Julian:

SHE TRUSTS ME.

"Clara."

"I'm fine."

"No, you're focused. That's different."

She kept scrolling.

Then she found a photo of the red folder.

Taken inside my apartment.

Two weeks before the wedding.

The caption came from Julian.

FOUND IT.

Charles replied in a group chat.

GOOD. AFTER THE CEREMONY, MOVE FAST.

Naomi opened her laptop.

"Because something changes when you marry."

"What?"

She turned the screen toward me.

An old financing agreement between Bennett Capital and Hartwell Hospitality.

Signed fifteen years earlier by our fathers.

If Hartwell missed certain debt ratios, Bennett Capital's note could convert into voting equity.

Thirty-four percent.

Enough to block a sale.

Enough to control a refinancing.

Enough to ruin Charles Hartwell's plan.

Naomi looked at me.

"Your father wasn't just an investor."

"He had leverage."

"Yes."

My phone buzzed again.

Unknown number.

A photo this time.

Julian and Sienna at the Maui hotel bar.

His hand around her wrist.

Her face angry.

Below it:

HE'S LYING TO HER TOO.

Then another message.

MEET ME TOMORROW. COME ALONE.

May you like

Signed:

SIENNA.
