Chapter 20 - SHE CAME BACK UP

On Emma's tenth birthday, Christopher did not throw a mansion party.

They rented picnic tables at a city park.

Friends.

Cupcakes.

No board members.

No family lawyers.

No speeches about legacy.

Emma wore blue shorts and carried a cheap plastic water gun.

Christopher considered that progress.

Margaret came.

Daniel came.

Rachel came late with a gift card and no legal documents.

Coach Maya brought a ridiculous inflatable shark.

At sunset, Emma sat beside Christopher near the fountain.

"Daddy?"

"Yeah?"

"Do you still see the pool sometimes?"

Her hand disappearing.

The pink dress underwater.

Her body still on stone.

"Yes."

"Me too."

"Do you want to talk about it?"

"Not really."

"Okay."

For years, the Pierce family had confused silence with strength.

Now silence could simply mean not today.

That difference mattered.

Pierce Holdings survived.

Smaller.

Independently governed.

Emma's shares remained protected from every adult around her, including Christopher.

The Clear Water Center expanded into three states.

Eleanor, Victor, Juliette, Stephen Vale, and Aaron all lived with the legal consequences of their choices.

No one was made innocent because someone else had been worse.

Christopher kept Anna's recorder in a locked fireproof box.

That mattered too.

Before leaving the park, Emma ran toward the fountain.

Christopher's body reacted before his mind did.

Turned.

Saw him.

"Don't freak out."

"I'm working on it."

She splashed him.

He deserved that.

Then she walked deeper until the water reached her knees.

No alarm.

No screaming.

No Juliette.

No Eleanor deciding what the moment meant.

Emma lifted both hands.

"I'm okay."

"I know."

And this time, when his daughter disappeared beneath the water, it was because she chose to dive.

One second.

Two.

Then Emma came back up laughing.

He did not rush in.

May you like

He did not decide for her.

He simply watched her breathe.
