Chapter 1 - THE MAN IN THE BACK DOOR

Marcus raised his hand to hit my six-year-old niece.
He never got the chance.
The rusted back door swung open, and a man in dusty Army fatigues stepped into the kitchen.
David Cole had been missing in action for seven weeks.
My sister had been told there was no confirmed word on whether he was alive.
Yet there he stood.
His duffel hit the linoleum with a hollow thud. Maya flinched on the wooden stool, one eye swollen purple, a greasy plate in one hand and her crying baby brother pressed against her chest with the other.
Marcus froze with his arm still raised.
Sarah dropped her coffee mug.
David did not yell.
That made the room feel more dangerous.
He looked at Maya first. Then at the baby. Then at Marcus.
"Put your hand down."
Marcus tried to laugh. "You don't know what happened here."
"I know what I walked in on."
David crossed the room and lifted baby Eli from Maya's arms. Maya nearly fell off the stool when the weight left her.
I rushed forward and caught her.
She whispered, "Aunt Emily, don't make him mad."
David heard her.
Something in his face changed.
Sarah moved between him and the counter. Too quickly.
That was when I noticed her purse sitting open behind her.
Inside were three things I could see clearly: a roll of cash, David's old checkbook, and a legal envelope stamped PROPERTY TRANSFER.
David saw them too.
Then he reached into his chest pocket.
A military travel voucher stuck out just far enough for me to read the date.
Four days ago.
Not today.
May you like
David had been back for four days.
And somehow, he had chosen this exact moment to walk through the door.
