Chapter 12 - THE RED BOX

Police searched the attic with a warrant.

Behind old Christmas decorations, they found a red metal toolbox secured with a small padlock.

Inside were twenty-three unopened letters from David.

Birthday notes to Maya.

Letters to Sarah.

A card he mailed after Eli was born.

He had written it from a temporary base after seeing his son on video for the first time.

Sarah sat at the district attorney's office while the letters were placed on the table.

"I never got these."

Ortiz believed her.

Marcus had intercepted them after convincing Sarah to forward David's mail to a private box "for security."

Isolation was not an accident.

It was a system.

Sarah opened one letter with shaking hands.

David had written:

I know this deployment is hardest on you. I don't want you carrying the whole family alone. When I get back, I'm taking leave. No excuses. We need time together.

Sarah pressed the page to her mouth.

"He told me David barely wrote because he didn't care anymore."

I felt anger toward Marcus.

Then anger toward Sarah.

Then pity.

None of those emotions canceled the others.

The red box also contained Maya's school notices.

Three warned about repeated absences.

One documented a teacher's concern after Maya arrived hungry.

Sarah had signed it.

That could not be blamed on intercepted mail.

David saw it too.

"You knew she was struggling."

Sarah whispered, "I kept thinking I could fix it."

"By tomorrow? Next week? After he hurt her again?"

She had no answer.

The custody evaluator later described Sarah's failure plainly: coercive control explained her decisions but did not erase her responsibility to protect her children.

Sarah signed the report without arguing.

That mattered to David more than tears.

Then Ortiz called us back into the room.

The red box contained one final envelope.

It was addressed to Marcus.

Inside was a handwritten list of David's travel dates and family routines.

At the bottom were Sarah's initials.

But Sarah stared at them and said, "Those aren't mine."

A handwriting expert was called.

The initials were forged.

By Dana.

And the list had been created before Sarah ever met Marcus.
