Chapter 13 - BEFORE THEY MET

The fraud ring had been watching military families before Marcus ever approached Sarah.
Dana purchased mailing lists from data brokers.
She identified service members with deployments, home ownership and spouses left behind.
Marcus approached the families socially.
A hardware store.
A school event.
A church fundraiser.
Anywhere help would look natural.
Sarah was not random.
She was selected.
The discovery changed the federal charges.
Wire fraud.
Identity theft.
Conspiracy.
Forgery.
And, for Marcus, child-abuse charges from what happened to Maya.
David sat through the briefing with his arms folded.
"So if Sarah hadn't fallen for him, he would have tried somebody else."
Ortiz nodded.
"Most likely."
Sarah cried when she heard.
For months she had believed her loneliness made her uniquely stupid.
Now she learned someone had studied that loneliness and weaponized it.
Still, David did not take her back.
Compassion was not reconciliation.
He filed for divorce.
Sarah signed without contest.
She also agreed that David should retain primary custody while she completed treatment and parenting requirements.
"I don't want the kids to think I'm fighting for Marcus," she said.
David answered, "Then don't. Fight for them."
For the first time, Sarah did.
She began telling investigators everything.
Passwords.
Meetings.
Dana's office.
The storage unit.
Other names Marcus had mentioned.
Her cooperation helped identify two additional victims.
Meanwhile, Maya slowly changed.
She stopped hiding food in her pillowcase.
She stopped asking permission to drink water.
One afternoon I found her sitting on the floor beside Eli, building a tower of blocks.
When he knocked it down, she laughed instead of panicking.
David stood in the doorway watching.
"That's the first time I've heard that laugh since I got back," he said.
Then Maya looked up.
"Daddy?"
"Yeah?"
"Are you going away again?"
David's face tightened.
May you like
His recovery orders were ending.
The Army wanted to know whether he planned to remain on active duty.
