Chapter 14 - OwenOwen held out for twelve hours.

Then talked.
Marcus hired him to follow Elena.
Luis cut the brake line.
Owen followed to make sure she stopped.
He claimed the crash was not supposed to be fatal.
Again.
The same cowardly excuse.
Scare her.
Pressure her.
Control her.
Never meant death.
But Elena died anyway.
Owen admitted reaching the wreck before police.
He took Elena’s bag.
Removed her phone.
Called Marcus.
Then left.
“That is why the phone vanished,” Harris said.
Adrian felt physically sick.
Elena may have been alive.
“Did you check her?”
Owen looked down.
“Was she breathing?”
Silence.
Adrian stood.
Harris stopped him from entering the interview room.
Good.
Adrian would have regretted it.
Owen finally whispered:
“Yes.”
Elena had been breathing when he left.
Adrian broke.
Not loudly.
He sat on the floor outside the room.
Maria sat beside him.
No words.
There are griefs that reopen differently when you learn the person you lost might have had minutes left.
Adrian whispered:
“He left her.”
Maria cried.
“Yes.”
Hospital records showed emergency services arrived nine minutes later.
Would earlier help have saved her?
No one could say.
That uncertainty became its own punishment.
Owen agreed to testify against Marcus.
Then gave investigators one more location.
A safe house outside Albany.
Police raided it.
Marcus was gone.
But the walls held surveillance monitors.
One feed showed Adrian’s safe residence.
