Chapter 10 - THE PROMISE

Mom sat across from me at the kitchen island, turning her wedding ring with one stiff finger.
"Ryan promised to pay for my treatment," she said. "The specialist your insurance wouldn't cover. He said he'd repay every penny and get me help at home."
"Instead he made you work for him."
She nodded. "I was embarrassed. I thought you would think I'd been foolish."
"I think you were trying to survive a lie."
"You were stationed everywhere when you were young. I learned how to be strong for you. Somewhere along the way I forgot you could be strong for me."
We sat with that for a while. Then Mom reached into her sweater pocket and gave me a folded receipt. Ryan had signed for the money on the day she transferred it. Under his name he'd written: Repayment after sale of Ellis cabin.
"I never agreed to sell," she said. "He added that later."
The next morning was the first temporary custody hearing. Ryan arrived in a pressed blue suit with Vivian beside him and a lawyer carrying an impressive stack of papers. I came with my attorney, the doctors' reports, and a list of facts I could prove.
Ryan's lawyer described me as absent, secretive, and financially controlling. He asked the court to order an immediate return to the former family home.
My attorney responded with the recent medical findings, the threat to Mom, and a proposal for safe, professionally supervised contact while the evidence was reviewed. The judge scheduled a fuller hearing and issued temporary safeguards without deciding anyone's guilt.
In the hallway, Ryan smiled as though he'd won.
"A judge isn't going to let you disappear with them forever," he said.
"I'm not trying to make their father disappear. I'm trying to make sure they're safe."
His smile vanished. "Then you need to see this."

He lifted his phone. On the screen was a photograph taken through the estate's sunroom window that very morning.
My mother was visible inside. So were the twins.
