Chapter 15 - THE BLUE FOLDER

Back at the estate, Mom asked for a legal pad. She drew the inside of our old kitchen: stove, fridge, pantry, and the high cabinet beside the laundry door.
"Vivian kept a blue folder up there," she said. "She thought I couldn't reach it."
"What's inside?"
"Copies of checks. Notes about the cabin. Your old bank statements. One page had instructions for Derek."
She closed her eyes. "And there was a list of what I was allowed to eat."
I gripped the counter. The list struck harder than any financial fraud. Somebody had reduced my mother to a schedule of permissions.
June advised me not to go searching the marital house on my own. Through the legal process, my attorney requested preservation and production of relevant documents; investigators pursued their own lawful avenues.
Two days later, the blue folder surfaced. Ryan had turned over a stack of business records and apparently failed to notice the folder tucked inside. Its contents were copied, documented, and routed to the appropriate attorneys and investigators.
There was a list of chores marked MARGARET; notes about her medication times; spreadsheets of transfers from Mom's accounts; and a page headed FAMILY LEVERAGE.
Under my name Ryan had written: She'll choose the children. Force quick settlement.
Under Mom's: Cabin. Savings. Easy pressure.
Under Vivian's handwriting was one sentence that made my hands go numb:
If Margaret refuses to cooperate, tell Claire the children will be taken away.
I read it twice. Then I turned the page.

Stapled to the back was a printed draft of a statement supposedly written by my mother, claiming that she had invented the abuse because I had told her to.
Her signature was already at the bottom.
