Chapter 10 - The Woman Called Nell

The cylinder's nameplate said E-13. The voice that came through its speaker was thin but sharp.
"Don't call me that," the young-looking woman said. "Elena called me Nell."
Clara pressed closer. "You knew her?"
"She talked to me when they let her wake. She taught me songs and how to read the labels. She said names mattered."
Nell's body looked thirteen, but she had lived through years of interrupted consciousness and captivity. Clara knew better than to assume she understood Nell's life from her face.
"We'll get you out," Clara promised.
"Don't promise what you can't do. Find the blue folder first."
Nell directed them to a panel behind an inspection light. Inside was a narrow document case Elena had hidden during a medical transfer. There were handwritten logs, photographs, and a tiny recording chip.
"I copied what I could," Nell said. "Every time they woke me, I learned one more thing."
Evelyn opened the folder. The first page listed thirty-one patients transported from clinics across three states. The last page listed sixteen deaths. Daniel Ross was number eleven.
Her knees buckled. Mara caught her.
"They told me his illness killed him," Evelyn whispered.
"They used experimental treatment without proper consent," Nell said. "Elena kept proof."
Jonas inserted the recording chip into the console. A woman's tired voice filled the room.
"If my daughters hear this, please understand that I never abandoned you. They made me choose between signing their forms and watching them hurt you. I refused. They kept me anyway."
Clara covered her mouth. It was the voice from June's old birthday recordings.
The message ended with a series of numbers and one sentence.
"The archive is the only thing Victoria cannot rewrite."

On the wall, the air counter slipped below twelve minutes.
At that instant, something heavy struck the medical door from the outside.
