Chapter 19 - The Voice on the Hill

Mara stepped in front of Clara. "If you shoot her, Victoria loses the only thing she wants."

The guard hesitated. Clara recognized his face from the estate monitors. He was young, frightened, and looking past them toward the smoke rising from the oak.

"They told us you were dangerous," he said.

"We're unarmed," Clara replied. "There are sick people trapped beneath your feet."

"The boss said nobody comes out."

"The boss is in custody," Mara said. "You can keep following her orders, or you can help us save them."

A woman called from behind the guard. "Federal agent! Lower the rifle."

Ortiz emerged with two officers. The guard dropped his weapon. Ortiz checked the tower's wiring while Clara explained what had happened.

"The connector is damaged," Ortiz said. "But this is a standard emergency line. We can patch the transmission through our field unit."

Clara dialed the number Evelyn had given her. Belowground, Jonas confirmed the archive was still intact. Ortiz's technician connected the receiver, and the transfer began.

Five percent. Twenty. Fifty-eight.

On the hill, Clara held Mara's hand so tightly their fingers ached. At eighty-nine percent, the connection flickered.

"Don't you dare," Mara whispered.

It steadied. One hundred percent.

Ortiz's radio crackled as confirmation arrived from the federal evidence server. Original recordings, medical records, consent forms, payment ledgers, and the complete list of patients had been preserved.

"We have it," Ortiz said. "We have all of it."

Clara laughed once, a shocked sound that turned into a sob.

Then Evelyn called from the lab, her voice ragged.

"The donor ward is losing backup power. Nell's cylinder is failing. The medics are coming, but we need help moving her now."

Clara looked down at the smoking oak.

"Tell Nell I'm coming back," she said.
