Chapter 7 - Sixty Seconds

The timer wasn't for a door. It was for Mara's heart.
Jonas zoomed in on the warning beneath her name: COMPLIANCE FAILURE DETECTED. CARDIAC OVERRIDE PENDING.
"Call it off," Clara said.
"Only Victoria can cancel the command from above."
Clara grabbed the microphone. "Mara, if you can hear me, don't go back upstairs."
Static hissed. Then a voice that sounded exactly like Clara's answered, "Why would I listen to you?"
"Because you're wearing a bomb somebody calls medicine."
"You don't know me."
"No. But I know what it's like to be lied to about your family."
The clock dropped to forty-two seconds.
In the service tunnel, Evelyn heard the exchange through an emergency speaker. She had a choice: keep running from the guards, or use the old freight lift and bring Mara to the shielded medical room below.
"Come on," she told Mara.
"You worked for her," Mara said. "I know your voice. You gave me shots when I was little."
Evelyn stopped. "Yes. I did."
"Then why should I trust you?"
"You shouldn't. Not yet." Evelyn opened the lift cage. "But I'll tell you every ugly thing I did if we survive this."
Mara stepped inside.
As the lift shuddered downward, Evelyn pulled a small bracelet from her pocket. It belonged to her son Daniel, who had died after a trial treatment. She had kept it through eleven years of silence.
"I thought staying close would let me protect somebody," she said. "Mostly I protected the people hurting them."
The timer reached ten.
In the lab, Clara slammed her palm against the medical-room door release. The lift opened, and Mara stumbled out, gasping.
"In here!" Jonas shouted.

She crossed the threshold as the countdown hit zero.
Mara collapsed. Her heart monitor went flat.
