Chapter 10 - Box 417

Helen obtained access to Box 417 through an emergency court order based on the estate documents Grace provided.

We entered the vault that afternoon.

The box contained no cash.

No jewelry.

Just paper.

Notarized transfers.

And a sealed letter addressed to me.

Adrienne Cross.

Caleb's handwriting was cramped and uneven.

If this reaches you, I probably failed to solve this quietly. Your company is worth fighting for because you built it without becoming cruel. Don't let men with clean suits convince you that theft becomes legal when enough lawyers touch it.

He described how Martin Vale had introduced him to Leonard Sterling. How Leonard pressured him to sell. How the forged transfer appeared after he refused.

Caleb believed my father had discovered the fraud too.

Caleb wrote that three days before his death, my father called him and said he had proof Martin was moving money through Cross Technologies to hide Sterling losses.

"This cannot be real," I whispered.

Grace stood beside me, crying silently.

At the bottom of the box was a microcassette recorder.

The tape hissed.

"Caleb, if you're recording, good. Martin knows I found the side ledger. Leonard knows too. Eleanor cannot know yet. Adrienne cannot know until we have enough to keep her safe."

My father's voice continued.

"If something happens to me, look at the medical charity accounts. That's where Martin hid the transfers."

The tape clicked off.

Vanessa had sent one message.

WE NEED TO TALK BEFORE YOU RUIN YOUR MOTHER'S LIFE TOO.

My mother, twenty years younger, sitting beside Leonard Sterling at a restaurant.

Their hands were clasped across the table.

On the back of the scanned photograph was a date.

Six months before Caleb invested in my company.

And beneath it, in Vanessa's handwriting:

ASK ELEANOR WHO INTRODUCED LEONARD TO YOUR FAMILY.
