Chapter 14 - The Engagement Was the Plan

Once we knew what to search for, the engagement itself began to look different.

Priya traced Vanessa's access to my personal and corporate calendars.

Helen reviewed the prenuptial draft Vanessa's lawyers had insisted on changing three times.

Buried in version twelve was a clause allowing spouses to serve as emergency custodians for certain family-controlled entities if I became incapacitated.

I had rejected it.

Vanessa brought it back under different language.

"She wasn't marrying you for half your money," Helen said.

"She was marrying me for access."

"Exactly."

One client archive included Sterling Meridian.

Vanessa needed proximity to me, not just wealth.

My engagement had been a corporate keycard.

"We found the missing bedroom-camera footage."

"I thought it was disabled."

"The main feed was. The local smart-light hub captured thirty-second diagnostic clips whenever motion spiked. Nobody knew it stored them."

He played the video.

Vanessa stood beside Eleanor's bed, holding the soup bowl.

My mother's voice came through faintly.

"I know about Martin's trust. I know about Marcus. Adrienne will know tonight."

Vanessa stepped closer.

"You have no idea what that will do."

"It will return stolen things to the people they belong to."

"You self-righteous old woman."

Then Vanessa lifted the bowl.

Grace rushed into frame.

The soup flew.

No dropped tray.

Vanessa had thrown it directly toward my mother's chest.

Grace took most of it across her arm and shoulder.

I watched the clip twice.

"Send it to police," I said.

Miles nodded.

"Someone is wiping the Sterling archive."

"From where?"

She stared at the trace.

"Retired executive credentials."

Martin Vale.

And according to the building access system, Martin had just entered Cross Technologies through the underground garage.
