Chapter 18 - The Boy Leonard Blamed

Police moved Grace and Marcus to a secure location before sunset.

Leonard's obsession made no rational sense until investigators found a voice memo on Vanessa's seized phone.

Leonard was ranting.

"If that boy establishes paternity, Vale's trust collapses into probate. Every hidden account gets reviewed. Every old transfer gets daylight."

Marcus was not dangerous because of money.

He was dangerous because proving who his biological father was could unlock records Leonard had spent decades burying.

"We believe Leonard is trying to reach Martin."

"Martin is in custody."

"He posted bond on the financial counts. The threat case is still being evaluated."

"Where is he?"

"Missing."

Then Grace remembered something.

"Caleb had a workshop."

"Where?"

"An old machine shop near Bastrop. Martin knew about it. Leonard did too."

They found Martin's car outside.

Inside the shop, Leonard and Martin were arguing over a metal lockbox.

Martin shouted, "You said this was contained!"

Leonard screamed back, "It was until your bastard child opened the door!"

Martin struck him.

Leonard reached for the lockbox, not a weapon.

Inside the box were duplicate ledgers, forged notary seals, copies of Caleb's original shares, and correspondence tying Leonard and Martin to the transfer scheme.

There was also a letter from my father.

To Eleanor.

Eleanor,

If I fail to come home, tell Adrienne the truth when she is strong enough to carry it. Caleb is helping me. Trust him. Do not trust Martin. And please forgive me for waiting too long to see what was happening inside my own company.

She cried before I reached the second paragraph.

"I spent eleven years thinking he died angry with me."

"He didn't."

Then she looked toward Grace.

"And I spent nine years failing Caleb too."

Grace shook her head.

May you like

"Then let's stop failing him now."

That was when we decided what to do with the company.
