Chapter 15 - The Shot

The gun went off.

Lorenzo jerked.

For one impossible second, nobody moved.

Then he dropped to one knee.

"Lorenzo!"

I ran toward him as agents slammed Silas to the floor.

Blood spread across Lorenzo's upper arm.

Not his chest.

Not his heart.

I could breathe again.

"You got shot," I said stupidly.

He looked at me. "Excellent medical assessment."

"Don't be funny."

"You prefer terrifying?"

"I prefer conscious."

Paramedics wrapped his shoulder while Vittorio was hauled past in handcuffs.

He stopped beside Lorenzo.

"You think this ends because they arrested me?"

Lorenzo looked up. "For you? Yes."

Vittorio's eyes shifted to me. "Ask her father what else he hid."

Then agents dragged him away.

I hated that the words worked.

Because Dad always had another layer.

At the hospital, Lorenzo refused pain medication until he knew my mother was safe. She had bruises but no serious injuries. The moment I saw her, I folded into her arms like I was ten years old.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"For what?"

"For hiding the box. For being afraid."

"Fear kept you alive."

Across the room, Lorenzo heard me.

Our eyes met.

Maybe that sentence belonged to both of us.

Natalie arrived with preliminary charges: kidnapping, attempted murder, conspiracy, fraud, money laundering, obstruction. Carlo had started talking the second he learned Vittorio was alive.

Silas was negotiating.

Ethan was blaming everyone except himself.

Normal Ethan behavior.

Then Natalie handed me a sealed evidence bag recovered from Vittorio's coat.

Inside was a photograph of my father.

On the back, Dad had written:

AMELIA HAS THE FINAL KEY. SHE JUST DOESN'T KNOW IT.

I stared at the message.

"What key?"

Mom looked away.

That was all I needed to see.

"Mom."

She sat down heavily.

"Your bakery," she said. "Your father didn't leave it to you because he thought you needed a business."

My chest tightened.

"Then why?"

"Because the building sits on top of something Vittorio has been searching for since before your father died."

Lorenzo, pale in the hospital bed, pushed himself upright.

May you like

"What is under the bakery?"

Mom whispered, "A vault."
