Chapter 16 - Beneath the Bakery

My bakery had exactly three secrets.
The first was that our cinnamon rolls used more butter than I admitted publicly.
The second was that the back freezer only worked if you kicked it near the hinge.
The third, apparently, was a federal-evidence vault beneath the floor.
Mom led us to Milwaukee the next afternoon after Lorenzo threatened to discharge himself from the hospital with or without permission.
He wore his arm in a sling and looked deeply offended by weakness.
"Sit," I told him.
"I'm fine."
"You got shot yesterday."
"In the arm."
"Oh, great. I'll tell your arm it doesn't count."
Marco laughed so hard he had to leave the room.
Dad's instructions were hidden inside an old recipe book. Page 47 - apple cake - contained a sequence of measurements that weren't measurements at all.
4-12-7-3.
Four floorboards from the east wall. Twelve inches from the oven line. Seven screws. Third latch.
Under the boards was a steel plate.
Beneath it, a narrow concrete stairway.
The vault held document boxes, hard drives, photographs, and copies of contracts going back twenty years.
Dad had built a complete map of Vittorio's hidden network.
But the biggest surprise sat on a shelf in a sealed plastic container.
A handwritten letter from Lorenzo's mother, Elena Duca.
Lorenzo's hand shook as he opened it.
My dearest son,
If you ever read this, your father failed to erase everything.
Elena described years of abuse, secret accounts, and a plan to flee with Lorenzo. She had contacted my father for help because Daniel Carter was auditing one of Vittorio's charities.
Dad hadn't just uncovered the conspiracy.
He had tried to help Lorenzo's mother escape it.
The final paragraph broke Lorenzo.
You are not your father's violence. Strength is what you protect, not what you can destroy.
He sat on the concrete step and covered his face.
I didn't tell him to be strong.
I sat beside him.
After a while, he took my hand.
Then Marco called from upstairs.
"We have a problem."
A black sedan had stopped across from the bakery.
Bianca was inside.

And the man holding a gun against her ribs was Calvin Rusk - Lorenzo's trusted security chief.
The same man who controlled every camera at the estate.
