Chapter 8 - Rosa's Choice

Lorenzo answered on speaker.
"Where is she?"
Carlo laughed softly. "Always straight to violence in your head, nephew. That's why people believe the stories."
"Where is my grandmother?"
"Ask her."
A second later, Rosa's voice came through.
"Lorenzo, don't come after me."
He looked like somebody had punched him.
"Nonna?"
"Carlo says he can end this. He says Amelia's father stole from the company and Silas only covered it up."
"He's lying."
"I know what Daniel Carter did," Carlo said. "The question is whether Amelia does."
My stomach dropped.
"Put Rosa back on."
"Bring the ledger to the old Duca printing plant at midnight. Come alone. If you bring police, your grandmother learns how expensive loyalty can be."
The call ended.
I looked at Lorenzo. "We're not giving him the original."
"I'm going."
"Obviously. So am I."
"No."
"You really haven't learned much in six weeks."
Marco muttered, "She's got you there."
Lorenzo gave him a look.
We copied every ledger page and sent encrypted files to an attorney Bianca trusted. Then I did something Lorenzo hated: I called federal investigator Natalie Brooks, whose card had been tucked into Dad's cashbox.
She answered on the second ring.
When I said my father's name, she went silent.
"I've been waiting five years for someone to call from that box," she said.
Dad had been cooperating with federal investigators before he died.
He wasn't stealing money.
He had been tracking it.
Black Harbor Holdings had laundered millions through construction contracts, fake consulting fees, and political donations. Carlo and Silas had used Duca companies as cover while Lorenzo was still learning the business.
My father had discovered it.
Then his car went off a wet highway.
"Can you prove they killed him?" I asked.
Natalie paused. "Not yet."
At 11:42 p.m., Lorenzo and I drove toward the abandoned printing plant with a fake ledger in his coat.
He glanced at me.
"If this goes wrong, stay behind me."
"If this goes wrong, try not to be six-foot-five in every doorway."
He almost smiled.
Then headlights appeared behind us.
Three black SUVs.
Marco's voice came over the earpiece.
"Those aren't ours."
May you like
The first SUV accelerated.
And rammed us from behind.
