Chapter 1 - The Question

My husband came home from a fifteen-day trip with my best friend and lied straight to my face.
So I asked one question.
“Angela has HIV. Did you know?”
David’s suitcase slipped against his leg.
He did not ask what I meant. He did not laugh. He did not say Angela’s name with surprise.
He grabbed his truck keys.
“I need to run out.”
The door slammed behind him.
That was the moment my eighteen-year marriage changed shape.
I had no proof Angela had HIV. She had once mentioned follow-up blood work, nothing more. I used the question because an innocent husband would have been confused.
David was terrified.
The next morning I found a clinic receipt in his truck. I photographed it, put it back exactly where it had been, and went to work at the middle school library as if my life were normal.
At lunch, my private investigator called.
“Rebecca, the affair is real.”
I closed my office door.
“How real?”
“Hotel records. Meals. One room. Photographs.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
Then Daniel Reeves said, “But don’t confront them yet.”
“Why?”
“They met someone in Scottsdale. Three times.”
He sent a photo.
David sat beside Angela at a restaurant table. Across from them was an older man in a gray suit. A leather folder lay open between them.
I enlarged the image until the letters blurred.
Then they sharpened.
REBECCA COLLINS.
Under my name were two words.
FAMILY TRUST.
I stared until the screen dimmed.
“Who is the man?” I asked.
“Martin Cole. Attorney. Corporate restructuring.”
“My husband already has an attorney.”
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Cole specializes in distressed companies and asset transfers.”
I felt something cold settle beneath my ribs.
David had not gone to Arizona only to sleep with my best friend.
He had taken my name into a room I was never supposed to know existed.
Then Daniel sent a second photograph.

This one showed Angela signing something.
And the signature she was practicing on the page was mine.
