Chapter 15 - The Hearing

Monday morning, David walked into court asking a judge to declare me unable to manage my own finances.

By 10:15, he was watching his plan fall apart.

Evelyn submitted my work records, medical evaluation, forged signatures, trust login logs, hotel records, and the guardianship draft created before I ever confronted him.

Then she played ten seconds of my mother’s recording.

The judge’s expression hardened.

Martin Cole, David’s attorney, asked for a recess.

Evelyn objected.

The judge denied the guardianship petition and referred the documents for fraud investigation.

David stared at me from across the courtroom.

He looked furious.

Not heartbroken.

Furious.

Outside, he caught my arm.

“You’re destroying everything.”

I pulled free.

“You forged my name.”

“I was saving the company.”

“You built a court case to call me unstable.”

“I needed time.”

“You needed my land.”

His face twisted.

“You think you earned that money? Your grandfather bought dirt fifty years ago.”

There it was.

The entitlement beneath everything.

Angela stood twenty feet away beside Detective Ortiz.

David saw her.

His expression changed.

“What did you tell them?”

Angela said nothing.

He started toward her.

Two deputies moved between them.

Then David’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen and went pale.

Victor Saye.

David rejected the call.

It rang again.

Ortiz said, “Answer it.”

David refused.

The third call went to voicemail.

A notification appeared on his lock screen.

One line of text.

MIDNIGHT. BRING THE ORIGINAL TRUST CERTIFICATE OR TYLER PAYS FOR YOUR FAILURE.

Angela screamed his name.

And for the first time, David looked genuinely afraid.
