Chapter 18 - The Barn

The trapped person was Leonard Greaves.

Firefighters pulled him out through a side door before the roof collapsed.

He had smoke inhalation and a broken wrist.

Victor had left him there.

Greaves started talking before the ambulance reached the hospital.

He had helped David push forged documents through the trust system.

He had flagged my account whenever legitimate review got too close.

He had accepted seventy-five thousand dollars from Victor.

And he confirmed something David had denied.

The scheme began eleven years earlier.

Right after my mother died.

Victor had met David at a lender conference and taught him how to build a paper trail slowly.

Small authorizations.

Dormant entities.

Old signatures copied into new forms.

Nothing big enough to attract attention until they needed it.

Angela became useful because she knew my history, my handwriting, my fears, my medical background.

My best friend had become a reference manual for stealing my life.

Victor was arrested that afternoon at a private airfield outside Rock Hill.

The original trust certificate was in his briefcase.

So were copies of my medical records.

And a one-page agreement promising David and Angela $1.5 million after closing.

Angela stared at it in the interview room.

“He told me we’d get half.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“You were never getting half.”

Angela looked at David through the glass.

Neither was he.

Victor had planned to use them, take the land, and leave them with the fraud.

By evening, David was arrested on fraud, forgery, conspiracy, and evidence-tampering charges.

Angela faced charges too, though prosecutors considered cooperation.

I thought the worst part was finally over.

Then Detective Ortiz handed me one last envelope from Victor’s briefcase.

On the front, in my mother’s handwriting, were three words.

FOR REBECCA ONLY.

Inside was not a legal document.

It was a letter.

May you like

And the first sentence read:

If you are reading this, then David finally tried to take what I was protecting from him.
